Art | Floral Crown

Send me flowers and I won't forget to put roses on your grave.

This is one of the sketches where I make up a lot of the detail. The original photo I found didn't focus on the floral crown and the subject's hair is supposed to be blonde. I would have kept the hair lighter but that would mean I would need to darken the background as well so I decided to stick to the same style as my previous sketches.

I am still aiming to sketch portraits under 30 minutes. I always start by figuring out how I want the subject to fill up the space on the paper then work on the facial features in detail and then the fun and challenging part is sketching the hair. An eraser was used to make the first layer of hair subdued so that there is more contrast in tone and texture.

I don't remember the last time I used a 2B pencil or the last time I sat in front of my desk to complete a sketch. I tried to sketch one of my favourite actresses two nights ago and my final sketch looked nothing like her and so I decided to choose subjects that I didn't know of to get rid of a few preconceptions of their facial features etc. Today I decided to try sketching for 30 minutes. It was a fun challenge as I was frantically sketching- not knowing whether to work on detail or tonal qualities. It was just too tempting to keep sketching after 30 minutes so it became a 45 minute sketch to a 60 minute sketch.

I was never close to finishing this portrait but I know for a fact that my yellow coloured pencils were very happy because I never needed to use them before. Yes my yellow pencils were very happy indeed.
